Fitch searching for new head football coach

November 20, 2019

The day after Fitch's football team ended its season with a 27-14 comeback victory over Cardinal Mooney speculation began that the school would be in the market for a new head coach.

Interim sideline boss Jon Elliot had just completed his initial season with a 5-5 record, including a back-to-back winning streak to close out the campaign. It truly was a terrific outcome considering the Falcons had to hastily regroup after the death of longtime head coach Phil Annarella shortly before the start of the summer training season. At the time the season culminated even Elliot himself wasn't confident that he would be returning in 2020.

"They're still figuring it out," Elliot said on the first weekend of November about Fitch's administrative decision makers. "Whatever happens, I'll never forget (the opportunity to be head coach)."

True to Elliot's thoughts, the opening for the Fitch head coaching position officially became available last Friday. The school's new supervisory group led by superintendent David Cappuzzello made its intention to hire a new head coach in a press release. Included in that release was a major prerequisite for the position.

"Organizing and directing a successful and competitive football program in accordance with the philosophy, rules, regulations and mission of the Austintown Local School," read a paragraph in the statement.

It was also noted that applicants should send letters of interest, resumes and references to Cappuzzello at 700 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown, 44515. Head coaching experience is not a requirement but is highly preferred. Quite honestly, if the Falcons expect to meet the aspiration in the above-mentioned part of the press release then one would think a veteran coach will be the favorite to claim the job. That is strictly speculation, however. One thing that is not speculative is that applications will be accepted by the school until Dec. 2.
