On Friday (Dec. 13) a delegation from American Legion Post 177 showed up at the Canfield McDonald's Restaurant to present a special plaque to Supervisor Trey Locke. The plaque recognized the support McDonald's gave towards the flag pole project on the Village Green.

"Back in September, McDonald's in Canfield held a fundraiser and gave us a sizable donation," said Post 177 Vice Commander Chuck Coleman.

He said the donation was for the post's latest project to place a large flag pole on the north end of the Village Green that would be visible for a long distance. The flag pole would also serve as a tribute to veterans and their sacrifices for freedom.

American Legion Post 177 Commander Mike Kubitza gives Canfield McDonald’s Supervisor Trey Locke a special award for helping in the placement of an American flag on the Village Green.

The pole is a 60-foot one that was held up due to a delay from the manufacturer. It was eventually delivered, but the weather had changed and prevented the concrete work from being completed.

"The pole was delivered in three sections, each being 22 feet long," Coleman said. "We talked with Cardinal Joint Fire Chief Don Hutchison, who is allowing it to be stored at Fire Station One on Herbert Road."

He said the fire station had long enough bays to house the long sections until Spring. When the weather breaks next year, the concrete will be poured and the flag installed. Coleman said the plan is to dedicate it on Memorial Day, 2020.
