CHS Swim and Dive team hosts annual fundraiser for team

On Jan. 5, 2020, the Canfield High School Swim and Dive Team will host its annual pancake breakfast in the high school cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the event will support the team and the program, including coach salaries, pool rental fees, meet entry fees, equipment, team suits, the team banquet and awards, after meet meals, and special busing to the NEAC Conference Championship meet.

According to co-event coordinators Kara Burnett and Lisa Helmick, the event volunteers take over the high school kitchen to prepare the breakfast. Members of the swim and dive team take shifts bussing tables, selling raffle tickets, and making sure everyone has enough to eat.

Burnett said the team has other fundraisers including the Canfield 4th of July Celebration/Parade concessions that include lemonade, burgers, and hotdogs. The Annual Pancake Breakfast falls into its own category.

"The Pancake breakfast turnout varies from year to year," Burnett said. "It is dependent on the weather due to the timing in January. It is a "Fun"raiser for the swim and dive team, camaraderie for the swimmers and divers, and a chance to get out and meet and serve the Canfield community."

The event marks the halfway point in the team's season, but it has a long run for the aquatic Cardinals.

"The tradition of the pancake breakfast has been around since 1969," she said.

As for the team, they are hoping to again send swimmers to the state finals. What is new this year is the coach, Jamie Stahl.

"Last year, five boys swam in the state meet; Luke Dietz, James Dietz, Bobby Kutsch, Jason Paris and Matthew Peckman," Burnett said. "This year, the swim team has a new coach, Jamie Stahl, who along with dive coach Ron Navarra and assistant coach Brian Stahl, has led the team to early successes."

The team's home meets take place at Beeghly Natatorium, at Youngstown State University. Pool time is provided and arranged by Canfield High School.

Tickets for the upcoming breakfast can be purchased at the door, or from any CHS swimmer, diver or booster parents. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-10. Take-out breakfasts are available for purchase. The breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and orange juice.
