Local youth group to host food drive

On Jan. 11, 2020, from 10 a.m. to noon, the youth group at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road in Poland will be hosting a drive-thru food drive for the Poland Food Pantry. In December the food pantry served 50 families, but the need will continue after Christmas.

The Poland Food Pantry operates out of the Poland United Methodist Church. Poland churches of other denominations support the pantry in a community-wide effort to help the less fortunate. The pantry distributes food the last Wednesday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Tuesday prior to that from 6 to 7p.m.

For Prince of Peace, the church has supported the pantry for at least two decades, but for the church's new youth group, this will be a first.

"The youth group started about a year and a half ago," said Christian Education and Youth Committee head Nora Smith. "This, however, is our first food collection for the pantry and the first service project we have extended to include community involvement. "We have [a half dozen] regular youth group members."

During the Jan. 11 drive, simply follow the signs to the drop off point and the youth will collect the donations. Smith said the Poland Food Pantry collects non-perishable food items including canned soup, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables and peanut butter.

"The most needed item at the food pantry is cereal," Smith said. "The Poland food pantry serves people in the Poland zip code, so all donations will stay in the community. If someone from outside of Poland comes seeking assistance they will help them out once and then direct them to information for a food pantry that serves the area they live."
