Alumni Association mini grants helping students

The Austintown Alumni Association awarded their 2020 mini grants early this year. Funding for the grants came from the association's fundraising activities.

According to association spokesperson Bonnie Pannunzio, funds to provide the mini grants come from the annual raffle ticket sales and from alumni members monetary donations. The mini grants program started in 2007, and since its beginning, $13,630 has been given to Austintown teachers for worthy purchases and programs.

"This is outside the school budget," Pannunzio said.

The grants are given out in December and can cover a lot. This year's funding is being used mostly for books and DVDs for the classroom.

"Some of the items purchased are computer or technology related," she said.

The association provides teachers with the applications and once they are turned in, each is reviewed before a special mini grant committee. The grants selected are then funded and the students in Austintown schools can begin enjoying the benefits of the items and materials provided.
