The Boardman Board of Education got to review the district's new Crisis Plan geared for school counselors at Monday's Board of Education meeting. The plan was presented to building principals Tuesday at 1 p.m. so every building will be able to review and prepare to put the plan into action should the need arise.

"As a counselor, I find this crisis plan to be a guideline for the administration of what to do in a crisis situation," said Boardman Center School Counselor Mindy DePietro. "Our emotions will be high, and this manual spells out very clearly what steps we need to take."

As a guidance department, along with Director of Instruction Jared Cardillo and Anne Bott, DePietro spent two full days working on the manual. Some of the counselors had been trained through the county last year to be on a team for Mahoning County in case of a crisis in any local schools.

"We were given the tools to support other students and staff in their time of need," she said. "I always felt the need for us to have this type of manual here in Boardman. After the tragedy that occurred in Boardman last year, our district made this a priority so that we are properly prepared for any given situation. Our high school staff and superintendent did an amazing job last year when our district went into crisis mode. This manual was created with that experience in the forefront of our minds and want to be sure we are prepared. Hopefully we will never need to use it."

Last year when Boardman teacher Nick Liste took his life, the district did bring in a team of counselors to help the students and staff deal with the loss. That event made it clear that outside counselors can make a difference, whether it is bringing a team to Boardman, or sending Boardman counselors to other districts to help as a team.

The District Crisis Response plan spells out steps for counselors and administrators if there's a sudden crisis or trauma. There's a county wide network of counselors who are trained in order to help neighboring districts if they have a sudden need. When a crisis strikes a district, it can very often be more than that school's counseling staff can handle, making the extra help from neighboring school districts a big plus.

"We are part of the Mahoning Valley School Support Network," said Cardillo. "All of our guidance counselors in all six buildings were trained for the network and they also helped work on the crisis plan. We've had other plans in place, but nothing like this one."

DePietro said the plan would be reviewed every year and updated as needed to keep it current.
