Canfield Township trustees discussed the use of Township Park and the sports fields this year at the Feb. 11 meeting.

First on the administrator's report was the discussion regarding the June 14 Aubrey Taylor Flag Football Tournament. The tournament is in its fifth year and is a fundraiser/awareness event for the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley (DSAV). The event is also a team effort with the North East Ohio Flag Football league.

This year the event heads are paying for the pavilion, and there was a question as to whether to charge for use of the field as well, since the township does pay to fertilize it and maintain it.

"Since it is for charity and the township is charging for the building, the field should be no fee," said Chairman Brian Governor.

According to the Aubrey Taylor Flag Football web pages, the event saw close to 1,000 people in attendance last year. An event was added called the Aubrey Taylor Buddy Bowl that allows children with disabilities to participate.

Trustees also set Feb. 20 as the date to meet with the Canfield Soccer Club to discuss the season and the fertilizing of the fields.

"The township does three fertilizations of the field per year," Governor said. "The soccer club does two. We just need to meet to make sure we are both on the same page.

On a different matter, Administrator Keith Rogers said the 2020 census is coming and residents would have four chances to register. The first would come by mail.

He said the roll out date was supposed to be May 8, but the forms may be coming sooner.

"The township will be receiving documents that must be filled out and mailed back in a timely manner," said Trustee Marie Cartwright. "I think we should designate Mr. Rogers as the go-to person to handle the census paperwork for the township."

All three trustees agreed and Rogers accepted the task.

As for residents, Rogers said mail and electronic are ways to fill out the information.

"If a person ignores the opportunities, then a person will be knocking on their door," he said.

Rogers added that the Census Bureau is still looking for census takers. To join the team, a person can visit and apply. Information given the township said census jobs have great pay, flexible hours, weekly pay, and paid training. For more information call 1-855-JOB-2020.
