Boardman Symphony and Chamber Orchestras earn top honors at state contest

The Boardman Orchestras once again made history for the Boardman Orchestra program and Boardman High School by bringing home Superior (I) ratings for both Symphony and Chamber Orchestra ensembles at the Ohio Music Education Association State Orchestra Adjudicated Event held at Hudson High School on Feb. 21.

The 114-member Boardman Symphony Orchestra has received 46 years of Superior ratings. Comments from the judges included: "your hard work resulted in a detailed and controlled performance", "Congratulations on an excellent performance today" and "Certainly an outstanding performance of great music." The orchestra is led by principal string players Anna Olivier, concertmaster; LiLi DiMuzio, assistant concertmaster; Karlynn Ricitelli and Lily Essad, second violin; Brynna Schobel and Cora Ams, viola; Guy Tepsick and Nadia Rawhneh, cello; Sonny Pavis and George Morar, bass; and principal wind players Aeva Richard, flute; Isabella Loccisano, oboe; Dom Meyer, clarinet; Abbie Sammartino, bassoon; Aaron Viars, French horn; Santino Testa, trumpet; John Blinsky, trombone,; Salvatore Buonamici, tuba; and Rory Kale, percussion. The Symphony Orchestra performed the Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet, Dovetail Overture by Robert Muczynski and Egmont Overture by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The 30-member Boardman Chamber Orchestra also received a Superior (I) rating, a rating they have been awarded every time they have performed at State Contest for the past 30 years. The Chamber Orchestra performed the Fiesta Jubiloso by Joseph Compello, Heartwounds and Last Spring by Edward Grieg and Concerto Grosso Opus 6 No. 8 by Arcangelo Corelli. Chamber Orchestra selections featured Anna Olivier and LiLi DiMuzio on violin and Guy Tepsick on cello. Comments about the Chamber Orchestra included: "Congratulations on your hard work" and "You played a demanding program very well."

The orchestras are under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Dominic DeLaurentis. Next on the calendar for the Boardman Orchestras will be a trip to Disney World in early March followed by our spring concerts. The next concert of the Boardman High School Orchestras will be on Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m. when the Project Mayhem Rock Orchestra presents their annual concert. Project Mayhem will also go on the road to Mentor High School for a performance on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center the Symphony, Chamber and Classical Orchestras will perform their Spring Concert featuring senior soloists Anna Olivier on violin and Cecilia Schuler on Piano.

Project Mayhem tickets can be purchased at the front office of Boardman High School Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 3 p.m.
