At the start of Wednesday's (March 4) Canfield City Council meeting, a brief segment of time was given to Canfield Police Chief Chuck Colucci, who had a special award of recognition for Sgt. Scott Bennett. He was joined by a member of the Canfield Police's Auxiliary Division, Corporal Roy Dyckman, who was the victim.

Colucci said the incident happened on Sept. 11, 2019. A 9-1-1 call came in to Canfield Police and Dispatcher Jenny Wright fielded the call. It was from John Dyckman, who quickly stated his brother Roy had fallen from a seated position and lost consciousness. Wright quickly dispatched police and emergency medical crews to the location. She then went into her protocol and began providing life-saving information to John.

"John went to work providing CPR under Wright's guidance, and received help from neighbor Don Adams who initiated chest compressions," Colucci said. "When Scott arrived he grabbed his portable AED (automated external defibrillator) and went right to work."

Canfield Police Chief Chuck Colucci presented a special award of recognition to Sgt. Scott Bennett for his life-saving efforts during a medical situation last September that involved Corporal Roy Dyckman, who was an officer in the Canfield Auxiliary Division.

He said Bennett continued with chest compressions until the crew from the Cardinal Joint Fire District showed up and took over care and transport. Roy was transported to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

Colucci said Dispatcher Wright, Adams, John Dyckman, and Sgt. Bennett all jumped into action and saved Roy's life that night.

Roy said he was glad to have individuals like Bennett springing into action to help others. He said without them he would not be around today.

Bennett, a 17-year veteran of the Canfield Department received a framed plaque recognizing his efforts and had a standing ovation from those at the meeting.
