Trustees hear from Senior Center regarding closing

March 25, 2020
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

At the Austintown Township March 16 meeting, it was announced "if schools close for weather or illness, the senior center will also close." That changed after the meeting with state orders to close down all senior centers.

Jessica Ricker said the center is being disinfected regularly. The center normally followed school closings during severe winter weather, but this month, it is among the hundreds of senior centers the governor wants closed until the COVID-19 threat is gone.

Even though the center is closed, Ricker said seniors can still visit the web site at and view the "Scam Scooper," listing current scams available online.

At the same meeting, Park Supervisor Todd Shaffer mentioned that on June 27 the Professional Disc Golf Association will host a tournament at the disc golf course in Austintown Township Park. The course is rated a 6 on a difficulty scale of 1 to 10. This will be the first professional disc golf tournament held in Austintown.

Regarding parks, the governor also asked that all playgrounds be closed, but people could still enjoy a walk in the park as long as they follow the 6-foot rules.

In other business from the meeting:

Trustees officially swore in fiscal officer Laura Wolfe to her term beginning April 1.

Approval was given to declare the following properties nuisances: 4660 Fitzgerald Ave., 103 South Main St., 6474 Smith St. and 3956 Lake Road.

Trustees moved forward in the liquor permit process for a Walmart gas station slated to be built in front of the store.

Trustees reminded residents to change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Trustee Ken Carano thanked Greenford Christian Church Austintown Campus for handing out batteries for detectors.

Township Administrator Michael Docrky said the township energy provider, First Energy Solutions, changed its name to Energy Harbor. The new name does not affect the township's agreement with them.
